The food in Ecuador is delicious and sometimes quite exotic. Think bananas, corn, corn, potatoes, bananas, rice....But coupled with fantastic seafoods, meats and spices, it can be quite tantalizing.
The ceviche is awesome, made with orange-juice, lime, oil, seaf00d, coriander and other spices. Hot seafood soups were also great.
Today, I challenged myself to deep fried Guinea Pig (モルモット). It was sliced down the middle, and served whole with the back facing up. The skin was crispy, with a sliver of fatty, oily meat. I ate it all, but I think there is a reason why this is only served in the Andean regions of Ecuador, Columbia, Peru, Bolivia. I washed it down with a large bottle of Pilsner, the local brew.
Today, I will play it safe and venture to the one and only Vietnamese restaurant in Quito!

mmm..ceviche looks awesome. don't know about that pig
vietnamese restaurant? please tell me where that is. love vietnamese food!
also, where did you get the cuy? quito? also would like to know about that. we still haven't tried it.
Hey Kumi...Vietnamese? That was the first restaurant I ever went to in Quito (outside the hotel). It's called Uncle Ho's in Mariscal on the corner of Calama and Almagro. The food is OISHII and the owner is really cool. (Kev, am promoting your place!!)
Rumor has it that there is a Korean restaurant. A friend of mine introduced me to an Asian supermarket called Casa Oriental (corner of Jorge Drum y Villalengua) but haven't gone yet.
Cuy? I tried it in Cotacachi, the leather town outside of Otavalo. It goes well with Pilsner to wash it down. It's worth trying....once. But the deep fried looks better than broiled.
oh i tried uncle ho's! we were actually very disappointed with the food there. (sorry kev, lol, but i there was very little meat on the plate and the sauce didn't have much flavor on the noodles... and my husband did not like that the fish was deep fried).
We went to a Korean place with a name that started with an "M" but I can't remember the name. IMO, overpriced and portions are too small. And they had more Japanese food than Korean food. The sushi was too small so I decided then to save my appetite for my Japan trip. Perhaps we are picky eaters though ;)
And there is a hostel in the Mariscal that has a Japanese owner so I hear and he has a restaurant. Every time I have gone it has been closed but they have home cooking like katsudon.
Casa Oriental. will take note! My friend said there was one near Colegio San Gabriel... maybe that is it? The two I knew of both shut down. It's a shame because the Korean guy sold daikon and fresh kimchi.
Oh and don't worry I don't think you are a stalker. That sucks that your daughters are so far away! Por que? Too bad, Sofia could have had a play mate! Yeah, I need to practice my nihongo... it is getting really bad. I wish I brought my study books. I was trying to catch up with all that I never learned kanji-wise. Anyway, I will stop rambling now! ttyl
I liked the Pho Noodles at Uncle Ho's! But still, relatively speaking, awesome for Quito and super homey. I still vouch for the place. Am still looking for a good Indian joint. The last place I went was pretty awful.
Oh, the other Japanese place...Huauki. Honestly, it was awful.Like REEEEEEEALY Bad! I have photos but I couldn't put it on my blog cuz the dude who works their (used to) was on my blog. But he's chillin in peru now so...
